London Photo Show 2025: Tom Burroughs

The London Photo Show is back! six photographers of the Urban Photographers Club community will be exhibiting their latest work! As they sit down with Noemie Decaen to discuss their projects, it is our pleasure to (re)introduce them and their photographs to you!

Our first photographer is Tom Burroughs. As a UK-based photographer, Tom can often be found kicking around London looking to capture interesting scenes and characters. With a strong passion for street photography, he is interested in the day-to-day interaction of the human element and the urban environment. Whether capturing the interplay of light, shadow and geometry or using flash to create dynamic environmental scenes, capturing the beat of the street drives his passion for photography.

ND: What inspired you to curate this particular collection of photographs for your exhibition?

TB: My inspiration was to combine my passion for music with my photography. This is a project I have been working on for around 2 years and involves finding scenes and moments of people immersed in music.

ND: Could you share some insights into the creative process behind these photographs?

TB: I shoot with a 28mm lens for this project which works perfectly. I want to be up close in the action so that I can feel that connection between the subject and the music. Shooting wide also gives me space to get as much action in the frame as I can. The movement in my images is achieved through using off-camera flash and a slow shutter speed, with an intent to create dynamic scenes that capture the interaction of the subject with the music.

ND: What emotions or messages do you hope viewers will take away from experiencing your exhibition?

TB: I hope that viewers feel the energy and movement across the project. The series intends to capture the immersion that someone can feel when they are listening to, or dancing to music and I hope that comes across.

ND: Are there any specific stories or moments from your photography that you would like to highlight in this exhibition?

TB:I am passionate about music and I express that as a DJ and have been lucky to play at some great parties and venues. Some of these images were actually captured at the same events that I have played at as a DJ.

ND: How do you see your photography evolving in the future, and how might that influence your future exhibitions?

TB: I would like to continue with street work and continue to progress my project with the end goal of creating a zine. I also have an idea for a side project called ‘Melomania’ which is looking to capture people who are completed lost in the music, as if they have transcended to a different place, almost meditative in nature.

ND: What has been your experience with UPC in regards to this exhibition?

TB: This is my second year exhibiting with UPC at the LPS. It is always a great experience and we support each other the best we can to make sure we get the best out of one another and as a group. It is a great thing to be involved in and I would encourage anyone to consider it if you have aspirations to exhibit your work.
